Artist’s Statement (Philosophy/Intention)
Tom’s work relates to a number of themes concerned with natural and unnatural forces. Shadow forms are a generalised feature, so too the form of visual mémoire, a relationship between unconscious patterns and real or imagined spaces. Seeing a painting is at first subjugation – follow the clues (control over a viewing audience). In reality viewers do not follow the given point of view – they stretch the narrative, create alternative interpretations and reconstruct the visual components. Here the title of the work serves to direct perception or alter the interpretation. The work itself is subject to ‘interpretation’ rather than a process of affirming real intentions. Personally interested in the interface between the visual and the linguistic, the possible meaning shifts as words become considered in relationship to image fragments and surface treatment (semiotics). The thought processes associated with art activity are cognitive and arguably develop educational experience in its broadest sense. Knowing, in terms of creative endeavour, relates to the wider experience of comprehending the real, the true and the imagined reality that is life in our contemporary world. Tom Davies |
